Optical Corrections

How to work with Optical Corrections workspace

Optical corrections are needed when the photographing system creates unwanted optical errors and they need to be removed. This workspace covers Lightroom Classic's lens correction and transform panels.

Dials

Fringing correction has been assign directly to dials as it is the primary tool for fixing optical errors. Left bank fixes purple fringing and right bank fixes green fringing.

Purple (left bank):

  • Top dial: Fringe purple amount - how strong is the effect
  • Middle dial: High point of purple hue (how reddish colors are removed)
  • Bottom dial: Low point of purple hue (how blueish colors are removed)

Green (right bank):

  • Top dial: Fringe green amount - how strong is the effect
  • Middle dial: High point of green hue (how blueish colors are removed)
  • Bottom dial: Low point of green hue (how yellowish colors are removed)

Touch Buttons

Some actions are sometimes needed to boost optical corrections - or some functions need to be readjusted after optical corrections take place to fine tune the image as desired.

Middle row:

  • Crop tool: Sometimes image's crop needs to be readjusted after fixing optical errors
  • Virtual Copy: To try out different fixes
  • Full Screen: To better see the changes
  • Vignetting Wheel: Activates vignetting adjustments to the wheel

Bottom row:

  • Lens Profile On/Off: Some lens profiles fix fringing issues automatically.
  • Guided Upright: For straightening angles (good for rooms and buildings)
  • Upright Auto: Fixes angle errors automatically (and might get it wrong)
  • Toggle Upright(s): Changes between different upright methods (one of them might automatically fix angle issues)

Wheel

Wheel ring is used for navigation between images and touch screen contains a menu for different adjustment sets.

  • Lens Corrections: Profile based lens distortion and vignette corrections included with manual image distortion correction.
  • Transform Basic: Tilt image horizontally and vertically - rotate and adjust aspects of the image
  • Transform Extra: Adjust the scale ("zoom") of the image and move image horizontally (x) or vertically (y).
  • Rough Fringe Correction: Quick tool for images which do not otherwise have "fringing colors". This tool set is using Magenta/Purple (HSL) saturation for purple fringing and Green/Aqua (HSL) saturation to remove green fringing.
